Every day, girls and women around the world experience violence. Did you know that just walking back and forth to school or to get water can put girls at risk?
But it’s not all bad news. Girls everywhere are standing up for themselves and for each other to end violence in their communities.
That’s why the United Nations made the theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence.
The UN Foundation’s Girl Up campaign works with the UN to make sure adolescent girls are safe and free from violence. We support programs that increase access to water and toilets, provide solar lanterns, and create safe spaces for girls.
This International Day of the Girl, we’re celebrating girls everywhere, the girls who are doing great things in their communities, and the girls who are our everyday heroes.
Tell us who your #GIRLHERO is. Post a photo on social media of a girl who inspires you – your very own #GIRLHERO – and tag her in the post. The girl you tag is then encouraged to pass it forward and post a photo of a different girl who inspires her.
