A massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal on April 25, 2015, affecting a reported 35 of the country’s 75 districts and causing more than 2,200 deaths, over 5,000 injuries, and significant damage to cultural heritage sites. The government of Nepal has requested assistance to address critical humanitarian needs.
The United Nations humanitarian system is urgently responding to the crisis:
- The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is providing personnel to help coordinate search and rescue efforts, among other actions;
- The World Health Organization isproviding emergency health kitswith supplies and medicine, as well as funds, to support urgent medical needs;
- The World Food Programme is providing food and trucks for distribution; and
- UNICEF is providing nutrition and water supplies.
