Activate for Equality: A Day of Service for International Women’s Day

This International Women’s Day apply your commitment and passion for girls’ and women’s rights and wellbeing by participating in the direct service campaign, “Activate for Equality: A Day of Service for International Women’s Day.” This is the perfect time to activate, wear purple and share purple, and come together for the common goal of gender equality.

Please take the following steps to organize a group of UNA members and AKA partners to volunteer for an organization that benefits gender equality for women and girls in your community, leading up to International Women’s Day on March 8, 2017.

Step 1: Research potential community organizations Look for organizations in your community that support women and girls.

Here are a few examples:

-          Homeless shelter for women

-          Afterschool program for girls

-          Organizations against domestic violence

-          Your local Boys and Girls Club

-          Girls on the Run

Step 2: Reach out to these organizations to set up a service day. Use the following templates to call/email the desired organization(s), see the Toolkit.

Step 3: Call for UNA Volunteers: Ask UNA members and our AKA partners to join you to support your selected organization. Provide a sign-up form with necessary details (location, date and time).

Step 4: Inform UNA Headquarters about your day of service Please send THIS FORM to UNA in advance of your service day to inform staff about your plans.

Step 5: Wear purple Purple is the official color of International Women’s Day, and dates to the women’s suffrage movement in the 1900’s, when purple was worn proudly to symbolize justice and dignity. Wear purple as you volunteer and share a photo on March 8th with why International Women’s Day is important to you!

Step 6: Use social media during your service project & on March 8th Use Hashtags: #IWD2017 #womensday #SDG5 #GenUN #UNAUSA

This campaign is spearheaded by The United Nations Foundation (UNF). UNF connects people, ideas, and resources with the UN’s work, mobilizing the expertise of business and non-governmental organizations to help the UN tackle issues including climate change, global health, women's empowerment, and U.S.-UN relations.
