Recently, UNA-USA and UNICEF partnered together to have an important discussion on one of the world’s most pressing issues: the Rohingya refugee crisis. Watch the record webinar by clicking HERE. Within the past year hundreds of thousands of Rohingya, including almost half a million children, have been displaced from Myanmar due to ethnic cleansing. As a result, these refugees have been living in horrific conditions while lacking basic necessities such as food, water and medical attention. During our discussion, UNICEF proposed various ways in which communities and young people can help create awareness for this important issue.
- Inform: It is important to be aware of humanitarian issues due to the large impact that they have on our global community. The Rohingya refugee crisis is by far one of the most pressing humanitarian issues in world history. According to UNICEF, civic engagement on behalf of the Rohingya refugee population underlines the need for UN agencies and its partners to assess the situation and provide urgent support to those in need. Communicating this information to your community is not only imperative to create civic awareness, but it is also needed to brainstorm global solutions to this crisis.
- Advocate: Not only is it important to educate your community about this humanitarian crisis, but it is also essential to advocate on behalf of the Rohingya population to our elected officials. These refugee children are vulnerable to disease and permanent displacement. The United Nations and its key players, such as the United States, are an important factor when addressing the human rights abuses that exist among the Rohingya population. Hundreds of thousands of children’s lives are at stake, and it is up to our advocacy efforts to ensure that they find a home that is safe and secure.
- Donate: UNICEF and its partners have made great strides in addressing the Rohingya refugee crisis, especially when it comes to informing and advocating to their local communities. Another way that individuals can help make a difference is through monetary donations. As students, it can oftentimes be difficult to contribute in this regard, however it is important to note that a little can go a long way. Luckily, UNICEF has come up with creative ways for everyone to donate their time, talent and treasures to help put an end to this crisis. You can learn more by clicking HERE.
As you can see, the Rohingya refugee crisis is an important issue that our world is currently facing. There is still much work to be done in order to put an end to this humanitarian disaster, however, as a UNA-USA member, you have the knowledge, experience and opportunity to help make a difference.
